About

Fishing and Outdoor World is the longest established specialist fishing and tackle outlet in Darwin operating since 1972.

The business was initially known as Stringer's Fishing and Outdoor World when two fishing mates, Col Stringer and George Voukolos decided to open a specialist fishing and tackle store.

Both Col and George were keen fishermen and they saw a need for a specialist store which would cater for the growing number of keen anglers. Col Stringer was already an established Fishing writer and his name was well known in fishing circles throughout Australia. Col Stringer and George Voukolos opened a small shop in Cavenagh Street next to the RSL building. The small store became the local fishing and shooting enthusiasts "toyshop" where fishing and camping gear, guns and accessories, and even "Dolphin Tinnies" were sold from. In Christmas of 1974, Darwin was devastated by cyclone Tracey. This was an extremely difficult time for many people in Darwin and Col and George became friends to many homeless families through their support and generosity by providing camping gear, clothing, gas stoves and other items so that some families could survive during this traumatic time. After cyclone Tracey, Col Stringer decided to move interstate. George Voukolos remained to continue the business and to eventually take charge of what has become the large family business that Fishing and Outdoor World Pty Limited is today. Fishing and Outdoor World were instrumental in introducing "Nilsmaster" and other lures to the Northern Territory and helped establish and promote many local lure makers.

Fishing and Outdoor World is very supportive of local NT tourism and promote local fishing guides and operators whenever possible. George and his staff take pride in providing expert advice on the type of tackle to use and in assisting many locals and tourists with their extensive knowledge of where to catch that elusive Barramundi. The Barramundi is a great natural resource of the Northern Territory and Fishing and Outdoor World have been instrumental over the past 32 years in pushing to preserve this resource which has and will always be the Northern Territories biggest tourist attraction. The continued growth of Fishing and Outdoor World has been built on providing the best possible customer service with quality products at a competitive price and with the best possible advice. Fishing and Outdoor World is now situated in a newer and larger store across the road from the previous premises in the RSL Building in Cavenagh Street. George and son Ronald along with 6 other staff members, extend a warm invitation to visit their store when next in Darwin, at 36 Cavenagh St Darwin. Ph 08 8981 6398
